Highlights of this issue include:

  • Consumer spending, as measured by retail sales, increased by 0.4% to $714.4 billion in September and was up 1.7% from one year ago. 
  • The Consumer Sentiment Index increased in September, rising by 2.2 points to 70.1, but was 2.3 points lower than its level one year ago.
  • Housing starts decreased 0.5% in September and fell 0.7% from September 2023.
