Our decades of business valuation and management consulting experience spans the most narrow and tactical of consulting niches, from evaluating current and designing new compensation plans that work to the most broadly-defined strategic business planning.

We are senior principals for two nationally known valuation firms in addition to establishing our own boutique consulting company, Y&S Advisory Services, designed to help others obtain and perform valuation assignments.

We are accomplished authors and lead instructors of advanced level valuation courses in several states for the AICPA, NACVA and state bar associations.

What this means to you is that no matter where you are in your valuation and consulting:  just beginning to contemplate starting your valuation niche, a solo practitioner looking to start or keep the work flowing, a small boutique firm striving to take your business to the next level (we have been there!), you can take away from our experiences a wealth of tools, techniques, perspectives, processes and a peace of mind that only comes from high-level peer review, services that will backstop your current operations and thrust you forward to wherever you want it to go.

You will no longer have to turn away assignments that you should be performing.

You will develop a confidence to roll your expertise over into providing expert witness services.

You will tackle valuation subject matter and industries you previously thought were too much. That IP valuation opportunity no longer looks beyond your reach.

On a one-off basis or as part of an ongoing relationship, placing at your professional side two of the nation's leading practitioners in business valuation has never been the reality it is now.

We are at the stages in our professional careers when we would like to see others succeed as we have.

Valuation "Experience"

Our "Experience" is what we are now offering to business valuation analysts. In effect, when we hung out our shingle, it could have said, Valuation Experience for Rent. Or even, Add Needed Professional Judgment to Your Valuation Assignments.

Premise: You are a valuation consultant, or you have decided to be one.

Hypothesis 1:  You know an abundant source of future business, but you lack one critical resource to get it. You have the credentials. You have the smarts.  You have the energy. You just lack experience.

Your engagement might face peer review, company auditors, even legal challenges.  The experience you lack may simply be how long you have been in the business … or it might not be time-of-service related at all, rather industry related, or subject-matter related.  Perhaps you are being offered an intellectual property valuation in an industry you've never investigated…or being asked to testify in a damages case. Whatever the assignment, it begs for "professional judgment" only experience can provide.

You see the opportunity.  But for related experience, it could be yours.  What's more, after the engagement, you would then have notched the relevant experience, propelling you to still more similar engagements.

You feel powerless. Well, not powerless, but you know this could be a pivot point in your career. You may well look back at this time as one that defined your professional life. How do we know? Because we have been there ourselves, we know exactly how you feel.

Now there is a solution to this. You can temporarily add the experience you need to your operation...experience that will guide you through the difficult engagements, protect you from Daubert and audit challenges, and give you the requisite experience you need to garner similar engagements in the future.

You've heard the cliché, "been there...done that!"  Well, we have. If you are facing it now, we have faced it several times … we may even have taught it in our too-many-to-mention CPE classes we put on as certified instructors in accounting, legal, business and academic arenas.

Here's the key:  Experience translates to the professional judgment that will allow your engagement to move forward. We can help you develop your practice.

You've probably heard this old joke:

"Sir, What is the secret of your success?"
"Two words."
"And, sir, what are they?"
"Right decisions."
"And how do you make right decisions?"
"One word."
"And, sir, what is that?"
"Experience."
"And how do you get experience?"
"Two words."
"And, sir, what are they?"
"Wrong decisions."

A bad valuation method choice today can lose a case.   A successful Daubert challenge can derail a career.  Farming out an engagement to another professional can cost a client.

You can now be the benefactor of our past "wrong decisions."  In effect, we are a Temporary Help agency.  You can temporarily hire the expertise you need to see you through those valuation challenges that lay in front of you.

Hypothesis 2: You have an unrealistic, unreachable deadline that must be met for the best interests of the client and your firm.

This happens more often than we'd like to admit.  It relates to managing the expectations of our clients, and we have all been guilty of falling short there.  Y&S Advisory can help, as evidenced by a real case.

  • A CPA firm specializing in financial forensics, business appraisal and related services, contacted Mr. Seigneur to assist in the timely completion of an ESOP valuation analysis and report. Mr. Seigneur was able to work with the client and the client's ESOP legal counsel to resolve certain issues regarding the establishment of the ESOP plan and otherwise provide the client with the resources necessary to comply with the plan's annual reporting requirements.

Result:  The outstanding issues were mediated. The deadline was met.  The client was retained. Y&S Advisory was able to bring its considerable experience to bear to lend a temporary hand where it was needed.

Hypothesis 3:  You have made it a strategic goal to build a valuation practice or grow the fledgling practice you currently have.

  • A large West Coast regional CPA firm decided to grow their revenues by establishing a business valuation practice.  After involved discussions with the firm's managing partner, Mr. Yeanoplos designed a detailed strategic action plan to enable the firm to take advantage of significant revenue growth opportunities in the region.  Mr. Yeanoplos provided in-house technical training for all management and staff of the firm.  He helped them develop a work paper system as well as software templates to maximize efficiency while maintaining technical accuracy.  Mr. Yeanoplos supervised and reviewed the work of staff members during the ramp up process.  He has continued to be involved with the development of the firm's business valuation practice.

Result:  The firm now has an established, thriving business valuation practice.

Hypothesis 4:  You are small, perhaps by yourself, and you are just starting out in the valuation business.

The best advice is offered by Eddy Parker, CPA, in March of 2010.

  • Get a seasoned valuation expert to review your first reports. The report is often the end product that is seen by clients, and a well-written report can leave a lasting impression on clients and counsel. The report review, if done properly, will take several hours to perform, so plan on engaging a valuation specialist to do this work with the knowledge that you will have to pay for this review.

Can you imagine the peace-of-mind you will have when your first valuation reports are reviewed by the esteemed professionals at Y&S Advisory?

We can provide more examples of how we have helped others and how we can help you.  If your goal is growth, and if that goal involves valuation services, we can help, from planning to execution; from proposal letters pitching your services, to engagement letters, to exit interviews.

We can get you into valuation, expand your valuation business, make your valuation business more efficient, and parlay your valuation business into a sophisticated post-valuation consultancy. We can also optimize your internal compensation plan and, when you're ready, we can even help you plan your business exit.

Is it time you built or reviewed your strategic plan? Is it time to reconcile the internal squabbles between Audit and Valuation?  Let us facilitate your retreat.
