AICPA honors healthcare expert Mark O. Dietrich

Mark Dietrich AICPA Contribution AwardHealthcare valuation expert Mark O. Dietrich, CPA/ABV, has been honored for his career contributions to the profession at the AICPA Healthcare Industry Conference in Nashville, Tenn. Dietrich, a renowned valuation thought leader in the area of healthcare, is the editor and a contributor to the new fourth edition of the BVR/AHLA Guide to Healthcare Industry Finance and Valuation.

In an interview in the December 2016 issue of Business Valuation Update, Dietrich talks about his practice and about some of the current hot topics in healthcare valuation. BVU also asked Dietrich how he got into valuation in the first place and whether he has always specialized in healthcare.

"Yes, I have always specialized in healthcare," he says. "As an undergraduate student, I worked in a law library and at small CPA firms doing tax work. When I finished graduate school, the CPA firm I joined did a fair amount of healthcare and dentistry practices. The firm picked up an 80-physician tax-exempt faculty group practice as an audit client and that’s where I got my audit experience to get certified. I stayed with that client for 20 years and it gave me a great deal of in-depth knowledge of medical practice operations. By the time I left that firm, I had built up a portfolio of almost exclusively healthcare clients. Along the way, I represented tax-exempt and taxable entities in Internal Revenue Service field audits, participated in the development of a 250-physician independent network and negotiation of its managed care and Medicare Advantage contracts. Overall, I’ve conducted more than 400 valuation engagements in the healthcare industry."

Congratulations, Mark, on being honored by the AICPA!
