Which business valuation certification is the best for expert witnesses?

If you're attempting to hire a financial expert, you've run into the alphabet soup of certifications in the US.  Four different organizations certify business appraisers (the American Society of Appraisers, the AICPA, NACVA, and the Institute of Business Appraisers).  And, that's before you get into the world of fraud examiners, CFAs, Ph.D's, and all the rest.

Any viewpoint that one BV credential is better than another is “unfortunate,” says NACVA president, Scott R. Saltzman, CPA, CVA, ASA, CFFA, in response to the recent article by R.J. Dragon. “Each business valuation organization and/or credential has its own unique elements,” Saltzman adds.  Industry and business experience--and the ability to withstand opposing counsel--are all as important.

NACVA’s credential comparison chart at least offers a starting point for litigators interested in what all those letters mean.
